Making Life Visibly Safer

In 1960, P&R Technologies, Inc. introduced Spanguard/Helimark, the world’s best power line markers, which power utilities have used to make their lines more visible to pilots. Our SpanGuard markers have been adopted by hundreds of utilities, helping save lives and protect equipment. Many of our original markers remain in service to this day, a testimony to their enduring quality.

Through the years we have improved and diversified our marker designs.

Some of the more significant milestones include:

  • In the 1960s, we developed a method of installing the markers on power lines that ensures life long attachment without damaging the line.
  • In the 1970s, we introduced our EHV (Extra High Voltage) markers that have a special coating and other features that protect them from line corona that can burn and melt other plastic markers.
  • In the 1980s, we began making molded markers from high tech plastic material with the benefits of more brilliant color and even longer life.
  • In the 1990s, we introduced aluminum markers for high temperature/high voltage ACSS conductors.
  • In the 2000s, we introduced self-illuminated aluminum markers that provide 24/7 FAA lighting for catenary lines and similar locations.

Along the way, we added bird diverters, including the renowned FireFly®, to help large and migratory birds see power lines in their flight path, especially at dawn and dusk.

P&R Tech also offers industry standard FAA tower lighting and solar powered obstruction lights, as well as clip-on flags and markers for low lines to help crane and tall equipment operators avoid snagging them.

We continue to develop and offer other kinds of safety and energy efficient products for the power utility industry, always with the goal of “making life visibly safer”!
